We believe in one God (Deuteronomy 6:4) who is Spirit (John 4:24). A triune being who reveals himself in three divine persons, with equal authority and essence: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:13-14). God is the creator of all things, both material and spiritual. He is Eternal (Revelation 1:8), Immutable (Malachi 3:6), Love, Holy, Perfect (Matthew 5:48), Just (John 17:25), and Sovereign over the universe (Acts 4:24). All his attributes coexist in harmony, his justice being loving and his love being just. His Being is not governed by time or space, and his priority is the glory of his Name.
The Holy Scriptures are God's specific revelation, through which we come to know Christ, the Only Begotten of the Father. All Scripture is inspired by God (2 Peter 1:20-21; 2 Timothy 3:16) and shows us His character and His will. It is truth (John 17:17), inerrant and infallible, perfect in its original manuscripts. We believe in the plenary, verbal inspiration of Scripture. The Holy Spirit guided each author to write His Word, without overriding their personalities, concerns, or sociocultural contexts. The Word of God is the believer's supreme authority in faith and practice. It reflects an absolute morality, by which we are responsible to live.
We believe God created humanity from the dust, in his image and likeness. The human being is created exclusively male and female (Genesis 1:27, Matthew 19:4), with intellect, will, and emotions (his image in us), to relate to their Creator, to reflect his glory, and with the charge of governing the earth (Genesis 1:26-28). Originally humanity had the spiritual capacity to relate to God, but after the fall, mankind became spiritually unable to approach God. We believe God grants life from conception, therefore all human life has value and dignity. Both man and woman have equal value and dignity before God, but with distinct roles, to complement one another.
The human being disobeyed God and sinned, causing a cataclysm for the human race, affecting the image of God in humanity through the contamination of sin. From that moment, humanity is dead, disabled, and unable to approach God (Ephesians 2:1, Colossians 2:13); is unjust and sinful (Romans 3:10); is guilty and destined for death (Romans 5:12). Our mind, will, and emotions are inclined toward evil (1 Corinthians 2:14). We do not understand or seek God (Romans 3:10-11), cannot submit to God (Romans 8:7), and cannot comprehend the things of the Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:14). So unless God intervenes, humanity is destined for eternal punishment in hell and deserves the wrath of God (Ephesians 2:3).
We believe in Christ Jesus, who is fully God and fully man at the same time, in complete harmony. He is the Son of God, promised since Genesis 3:15 and reaffirmed to Abraham as the blessing of all nations (Galatians 3:16). He is the second person of the Trinity, and in his death and resurrection we receive salvation. We believe in the sinlessness of Christ, miraculously conceived by the work of the Holy Spirit. He was born of Mary, lived a perfect life, and died on the cross as a substitutionary sacrifice (Isaiah 53:5-6). He conquered death, sin, and Satan, rose on the third day, ascended to heaven in his glorified body (Acts 1:9-10), and now sits at the right hand of God as our High Priest and Advocate (Romans 8:34; Hebrews 7:25). He is the only mediator between God and man (1 Timothy 2:5-6). He was the propitiation (Romans 3:25) for our sins — receiving the wrath we deserved — to reconcile us to God and make us righteous, new creations. Salvation is only through Christ.
We believe salvation is not by works; it is a unique and exclusive gift of God, granted by his grace alone through the gift of faith (Ephesians 2:8-9) in Christ (2 Timothy 1:9). Salvation is for the praise of his glory (Ephesians 1:4-6; John 1:12-13; 6:44; Romans 9), and was established before time began, under the plan of the triune God. The Father chose his people before the foundation of the world; the Son redeems his elect in the present age; and the Holy Spirit seals his elect to keep them for their future glorification (Ephesians 1:3-14). God, sovereignly and by his mercy, regenerates, justifies (Acts 13:39), and saves the sinner. God confers the righteousness and holiness of Jesus on the repentant sinner (Galatians 2:16). God calls and regenerates the sinner beforehand, so that he may voluntarily believe the gospel of Christ and exercise the faith that God provides for salvation. Salvation is completely secure in Christ (Hebrews 7:25); it is not lost and depends on God alone.
We believe that God, sovereignly and before the foundation of the world, chose individuals to form a people for himself (John 17:6, Romans 8:29-30, Romans 9:16, 18, 1 Corinthians 1:28, 2 Thessalonians 2:13, 1 Thessalonians 1:4).
Through the power of the Holy Spirit, the believer is enabled and responsible to grow, mature, and live in holiness, turning from sin and fighting in the Spirit against the flesh. Though he who began the work in us will perfect it (Philippians 1:6), the believer is fully responsible for his actions (John 3:36; James 1:13-14). He must submit his will to the Word, so that he dies to sin and lives for righteousness (Romans 6:4-10). We believe a true believer is moved by grace to love reading the Word, to pray at all times, and to commit to a local faith community (local church). The Bible clearly teaches that in the process of sanctification every believer must belong to and be a member of a local congregation, under the supervision of the corresponding church leadership. The local church is a means of grace that God uses for the sanctification of the saints (Hebrews 3:13). The believer remains a sinner but is empowered to fight against sin through the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is God himself, the third person of the Trinity, with the same divine attributes as the Father and the Son. He testifies of Christ, convicts of sin (John 16:8-11), and regenerates us to new life (Titus 3:5), giving believers a new heart with the capacity to obey. He guides and leads the believer through the understanding of Scripture (Romans 8:14). Every believer, at conversion, is baptized by the Holy Spirit once and for all, uniting us to the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:13). He comes and dwells in every believer, making us his temple (1 Corinthians 6:19). He provides his fruit (Galatians 5:22) for sanctification and Christlikeness, as well as spiritual gifts for the growth and equipping of the church (1 Corinthians 12). We believe the Holy Spirit's primary role is to testify of Christ to our lives (John 15:26) and to equip us in our sanctification.
The gifts are given to enable and equip the church. They are not uncontrollable mystical states, and the way the gifts operated before the completion of the canon is not the same as how they operate today. We believe God continues to work through his Spirit and his gifts, but Scripture is the only and final revelation of God (Hebrews 1:1-4). There are no new revelations, and every use of a gift must be submitted to a right understanding of Christ in the Word and guided by church leadership. Therefore, we do not believe in miraculous gifts in the way popularly taught in charismatic circles. Prophecy today is the preaching of the Word; miracles certainly exist, but no one has a special power to heal — in fact, they are not the norm but the exception. Tongues were not strange utterances, but the ability to speak another language.
We believe every believer belongs to the universal Church of Christ and must commit to a local church, where they can gather, take part in the ordinances, grow in community, and serve alongside other believers (Hebrews 10:24-25; Ephesians 3:6-10). God uses the church for our teaching, care, sanctification, and correction, as we learn to love, encourage, and exhort one another.
Christ is the head of the Church. Under his authority, the local church is shepherded by a plurality of elders, men who meet the qualifications set out in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1. The elders are responsible for teaching the Word, caring for the congregation, and watching over sound doctrine. Men and women serve actively in the life and ministry of the church according to the gifts God has given them.
We believe the church exists to glorify God, make disciples, proclaim the Gospel, and take part in planting churches and in local and cross-cultural mission (Matthew 28:18-20).
The Gospel of grace. We believe salvation is by the grace of God, received only through faith, grounded in the work of Christ, revealed in Scripture, and for the glory of God.
Sola Scriptura — Scripture is our final authority.
Sola Gratia — Salvation is by grace.
Sola Fide — We are justified by faith.
Solus Christus — Christ is sufficient for our salvation.
Soli Deo Gloria — All glory belongs to God.
We believe the Word of God gives us two ordinances or sacraments instituted by Christ himself. Baptism, a public way of proclaiming our faith, a symbol that identifies us with the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ (Romans 6:4-5), publicly expressing new life in Christ by being immersed in water to exemplify Christ's redemptive work.
The Lord's Supper is an ordinance instituted by God for believers who are part of the body of Christ. It is a memorial of Christ's sacrifice looking toward his glorious return; the gospel is proclaimed and the work of salvation is treasured. In the Bible, the Supper is observed by believers who had previously been baptized and formally joined to the local church. Paul also exhorts believers to examine themselves before partaking of this sacrament (1 Corinthians 11:17-34).
We believe Christ will return physically and gloriously for his church and will come to fully restore his kingdom on earth. We believe in the bodily resurrection of both believers and unbelievers at the end of time (Acts 24:15); the former will inherit eternal life and the latter will suffer eternal torment (Matthew 25:31-46).
“Total depravity does not mean that every human being is as bad as he could possibly be, but that sin has affected every part of our being: mind, will, emotions, and body. We are morally and spiritually dead, unable to come to God on our own.”— R.C. Sproul, Chosen by God
“God does not choose certain people because he foresaw that they would choose him. His election is based on his sovereign will, not on any human merit. It is a free election, not conditioned by anything outside himself.”— R.C. Sproul, What is Reformed Theology?
“Christ died with a definite purpose: to effectively redeem his people.”— R.C. Sproul, Truths We Confess
“When the Holy Spirit effectually calls the elect, he draws them irresistibly to Christ. God does not force against the will, but changes the heart so that we freely desire him.”— R.C. Sproul, Chosen by God
“God not only saves his people, but sustains them to the end. Those who are truly regenerated will persevere in the faith, not by their own strength, but by the faithfulness of God.”— R.C. Sproul, What is Reformed Theology?
